Oliver McCollum

Obituary of Oliver McCollum

A resident of Chatham, Oliver McCollum passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at the age of 86.

Born in West Belfast, Ireland, Oliver was the son of the late John and Mary (née Armstrong) McCollum. Raised in the tight knit community of the Falls Road and The Pound Loney, Oliver reluctantly left his home in 1972 during the Troubles to raise his family in Canada. He found work at International Harvester, later Navistar, where he was infamous for his hard work and memorable pranks.

Beloved husband of Toni McCollum (née Mowrey) and the late Shirley (née Henry) (1993).

Father to Kevin McCollum (Liisa), Patrick McCollum (Rhonda), James McCollum (Lyrelynn), Connor McCollum (Krys), Rosanne McCollum ( Adam), and John McCollum.

Oliver is survived by his grandchildren Sean Michael, Claire, Neil, Kathleen, Erin, Siobhan, Keava, Kailen, Abby, Oliver, and Jethro, great-grandchildren Hazel, Henry, Owen, and Liam, and two sisters Marie and Bridie.

Predeceased by his brothers Bill, John and Patrick and sister Lily.

Also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Oliver is also being celebrated, remembered, and missed dearly by family, friends, and community across the pond in Belfast, Ireland.

All who knew Oliver will remember him for his infectious laugh and wit, his powerful hugs, huge loving heart and kindness and generosity to everyone, friend and stranger. Poet, painter, philosopher, singer and raconteur par excellence, Oliver lived a full life with passion and panache. The pain we all feel at his loss is the measure of the love he inspired. Oliver was a devout Catholic, who attended mass and prayed the rosary every day.  He had received the sacrament of last rites.

As per Oliver's wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be remembered privately by his family. A Celebration of Life will take place later this year.

Donations made in memory of Oliver to the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family.
