Our sincere sympathy to the entire Van Boxtel family, both here in Canada and in the Netherlands. Jac was a wonderful father, Opa, brother and uncle. He was a man for all seasons. We enjoyed many conversations with him - and even a song or two - over a coffee (with Bailey’s of course), a rye or during an afternoon visit with the family. He will be missed, but we know he will live on in each of you.

The van Vugt and van Boxtel families go back a long way — to the 1950s, in fact, when both toiled as farm labourers in the Blenheim area. The friendship continued even after the death of my father in 1962 and the passing of Jac/Sjaak’s wife, Marie, in 2001. Sjaak, as he was familiarly known in Dutch, would often visit my mother in Ridgetown, bringing along a generous load of vegetables from his garden. He was a man of the earth but with a keen mind, a self-taught organist. When he learned I would be visiting The Netherlands in 2015 and wanted to improve my rusty Dutch, he offered to help me scrape off some of that rust with informal conversations. We never did have those talks. I know I would have enjoyed them.

Veel sterkte met het verlies van oom Sjaak. Een heel bijzonder mens. Het was altijd een belevenis als hij weer naar Nederland kwam. Altijd bijzonder gevonden dat ik een oom in Canada had.
