Ries, Orval A. F.

A longtime resident of Toronto, more recently of Ridgetown, Orval Ries passed away at Village on the Ridge on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the age of 86.

He was the son of the late John and Barbara (nee Russwurm) Ries.

Predeceased by his siblings, Pearl Hawker (Robert), Myrtle Karlson (Herb), and Harvey Ries.

Remembered always by his nieces, Anita Lock (Richard Zaroda), Karen Benson (Brian), and nephew, Kenneth Karlson.

Predeceased by his nephew, Keith Karlson.

Missed by many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Born in Toronto, Orval commenced his musical career as a vocal soloist. He then became an accomplished orchestral and solo oboist. Following graduation from the University of Toronto, he continued his studies in London and Paris. He was a Music Department Head and teacher of vocal and instrumental music. He then pursued a conducting career at the University of Toronto while continuing to gain vocal experience in the Canadian Opera Company and with the Festival Singers of Canada. He enjoyed many years as a conductor of the East York Symphony Orchestra. He was an avid collector of classic and symphony LP's and movies. Orval loved his family very much and his presence will be missed by all.

A Private Family Graveside Service will take place in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Scarborough.

In memory of Orval, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or to Parkinson Canada.
