Obituary of Robert Hodgson

Robert Y, Hodgson (Bob) died peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham Campus on Thursday October 16, 2014. “Our Country is in Mourning, a Veteran died today”. Bob was born to late parents Frederick & Elsie (Yarnall) Hodgson at Lashburn Saskatchewan on February 23, 1923. He was raised and educated in a Barr Colonist farming area ten miles north of Lashburn. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years Helen (Penyk) (2013). He is loved and missed by his son Douglas (MaryAnne) of Chatham, daughter Linda Hatton (Janet) of Mitchell and grandsons Matthew (Lindsey), Adam, David (Kristy) Hodgson. He is fondly remembered by his sister Margaret Lypkie of Lashburn, Sask. and brother Donald (Frances) of Winkler, Manitoba and many nieces and nephews. Bob enlisted with the RCAF mid September 1941 serving as a wireless operator in Canada and overseas with the 426 Thunderbird Heavy Bomber Squadron. Post WWII Bob found employment in Winnipeg with the Board of Grain Commissioners (later the Canadian Grain Commission), starting as a grain sampler in September 1945. He was transferred to Chatham in July 1963 as Inspector in Charge of the Chatham office. He retired in May 1985 as Officer in Charge of the Bayport District. Bob was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He served in many offices including Grand Knight and District Deputy. He was also a member of the 411 Wing, Airforce Association. He was a gentleman. He was a gentle man. Friends will be received at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair St., Chatham on Sunday October 19, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 p.m. Wing 411 will conduct a Memorial Service at the Funeral Home on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Knights Prayers will be offered at the Funeral Home on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ridgetown. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Howard Township. Donations in memory of Bob to the Canadian Food for Children Fund would be greatly appreciated.
