Obituary of Elsie Thoonen

THOONEN: Elizabeth 'Elsie' (nee Grimminck) -

A resident of Blenheim for 65 years, Elsie Thoonen passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance - Chatham with her family at her side on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the age of 80.

Born in Lewedorp, The Netherlands, Elsie was the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Geertruida (Folker) Grimminck.

Beloved wife of 47 years to the late Henry 'Hank' Thoonen (2005).

Loving mother of Henry Thoonen of Kitchener, Rosemary Dubowchik (Gene) of Connecticut, Ed Thoonen (Kathy) of Ilderton, and Fred Thoonen (Lori) of Guelph.

Proud grandmother of Anna Dubowchik.

Sadly missed by seven brothers, seven sisters and many brothers- and sisters-in-law. Survived by 58 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and -nephews. Also missed by friends and extended family.

Elsie was a well-known author and illustrator of six books on the local history of Chatham-Kent. She was a celebrated artist and historian, having received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal in 2003. She was a Brownie leader for many years, for which she was recognized with the Citizen of the Year Award. Elsie painted the backdrops for the Ridge Players for over 20 years, and also painted the mural at the Blenheim Freedom Library. Elsie volunteered at many local elementary schools throughout the years and organized numerous art workshops.

Elsie loved traveling, lady bugs, hummingbirds, butterflies, and gardens.

Special thanks to those who cared for her at her home, especially Andrea and Wendy. Also thanks to the staff at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for their care and compassion.

Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 141 Park Street, Blenheim on Wednesday from 3:00 - 5:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 95 Marlborough St. N., Blenheim. Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Elsie to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Foundation of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
